Dokmai Collection is built upon strong principles and a clear message - freedom to express yourself in naturally made, ethically sourced, easy to wear and affordable couture.
From an early age I enjoyed designing special dresses and at sixteen I started to work in my first bridal shop where I learned, appreciated, and came to understand the emotional journey of this experience. The stark contrast between design in fast fashion environments and design in bridalwear, influences every aspect of how the dresses are made. From how the cotton is grown, how it is woven and who by, treated, made with love and care. My ideas for this collection began at Manchester School of Art, with the collection I presented in 2005 being the catalyst for my designs now.
I found my true inspiration on a visit to Laos, it was so tranquil and full of beauty. I visited fabric weavers, and those kind, calm and creative workers made me decide I wanted to collaborate with them, and have my fabric woven there.
Laos is celebrated in my work, vibrant exotic floral colours, interspersed with reflections of my home environment, cool natural hues from Norfolk Woad, which I used for my own wedding dress. My bridal wear is a step away from traditional white, satin, lace, and corsets. Playful designs without restrictions. Avant-garde yet comfortable, flattering, soft breathable natural fabrics designed to accentuate and that through the power of colour, style, and structure, celebrate individual uniqueness.
Dok-Mai in Lao means ‘to flower’ or ‘to bloom’ which is how I want the bride to feel.
