Rewritten Bridesmaids: Sustainable Wedding Fashions for Every Body

Each of Rewritten’s sustainable designs celebrate those in your wedding party while encapsulating the travels of founders and designers Katie and Fran. From Mykonos to Soho, these designs evoke the same feelings of urban-chic the brand has become known for in the last five years. I had the chance to catch up with Ella, Rewritten Bridesmaid’s brand manager, who had a lot to tell me about the future of Rewritten.

A group of feminine-presenting people stand together, posing casually, in variations of the same dress in various shades of purple and pink. The models skin tones and sizes all differ. One model wears a stark white jumpsuit and smiles.

Based in Hackney Wick on Fish Island, and only a moderate walk across the Olympic Park from Westfield, Stratford, Rewritten Bridesmaids loves its location. The journey itself—taken with your wedding party to this corner of London—can be part of the fun! Inside the boutique you’ll find cheerfully pink walls, a lovely luxe sofa, two fitting rooms and rails of vibrant hues—all the better to match the colorful Frida Kahlo-printed pillow cushion.

The name Rewritten comes directly from the experiences of the designers back when they were themselves brides. “The reason the brand started is because Fran and Katie used to work together at a different brand; they couldn’t find bridesmaids dresses they wanted at the time. They decided to “rewrite” the rules about bridesmaids and what they should wear and who they are,” Ella tells me with a grin. The founders have since watched their brand grow—particularly in the last year! The focus at Rewritten is very much on growth—they’ve launched a bridal line named after famous singers—I thought the names Stevie and Joni seemed familiar! Fran, the primary designer, has created this collection to be as sustainable as the line of bridesmaids dresses that will soon see a color expansion—the colour is one that reflects all the growth pushing Rewritten into the sustainable future. Some may think pink, but Rewritten is thinking green! “That’s a trend that will be here to stay,” Ella says of incorporating shades of green into your wedding as a go-to.

Three models all with slight frames and light skin, two with blond hair on either side of a model with short dark hair, carry bouquets and wear green dresses.

The Stevie Blouse, part of the self-aware, sustainable bridal line, is made with pea silk, a version of the material that doesn’t cost the lives of silkworms and it’s one of Ella’s personal favorite pieces. Every one of the personally-named pieces, from bridal to bridesmaids, is named to reflect the personality of each piece—“there’s always a story behind the story,” Ella tells me of the naming process. Who’s choosing Rewritten? “We can tailor to any sort of client,” Ella assures me. Rewritten has no ideal image for their clients, rather they hope to strike a chord with people whose personalities are as relatable and strong as each of their pieces. We’re looking for perfect fits here, which is possible given the wide array of sample sizes and colors available within the boutique, sizes 8 to 26 UK. “We can find something for anyone if we are the brand they want,” Ella shares.

In a historic building replete with marble floors, columns and balustrades, a group of feminine presenting models stand in a staggered pattern wearing red, pink and orange dresses. All models vary in skin tone, size, hair style and dress shape.

“The whole thing about having a wedding is it’s all about love and [love] should go out to your bridesmaids as well,” she says. “You want a wedding where your bridesmaids can be as comfortable and confident as they can be.” And that’s what Rewritten does best—from providing a mix of styles, sizes, colors and aesthetics—all with a heartfelt, sustainable story in their very threads—“whoever you are, you can wear our dresses.”

A thin, dark skinned model wearing a high-neck white dress, leaves a building, arm raised holding the hand of another brown skinned model in a purple dress. Behind them, white models in orange dresses follow. They are celebratory and carry bouquets.

I’m sure you’re sold, but let’s talk a bit about what you’ll see at the A Most Curious Wedding Fair, March 4th-6th at the Truman Brewery. Besides their three new colors, which will be making their debut at the show, the entire Bridal line will be available at the show for your perusal—I for one can’t wait to feel that pea silk slip between my fingers. And finally: “We always offer a giveaway at our shows. Whether [you] stay for a minute, or an hour, we love giving back to anyone who loves our brand.” Win your wedding party some bridesmaids dresses by stopping by the Rewritten stand at the A Most Curious Wedding Fair this March!
